Seasonal change: Three north London designers on autumnal inspiration for the home

Ham & High journalist Zita Whalley got in touch to ask if I could contribute to a feature on Autumn Trends. I get asked about trends alot, but enjoy thinking about the subject from the perpective of intrinsic motivation rather than focussing on what is in fashion right now.

Audrey Whelan, Audrey Whelan Design – flexible pieces for versatile spaces

Let’s take a step back and be honest with ourselves as to how we can best tweak our homes to suit our evolving needs, as we say goodbye to the warmer days of summer and settle into autumn.

For example, perhaps we need to let go of the large heavy coffee table to create more floor space for exercising at home or for children to play. Could it be replaced with one or two small side tables which can be easily moved around?

I am spotting more and more items that lend themselves to flexibility, while being both functional and visually appealing – and injecting a new splash of colour too!

The DLM side table from Hay (available from Tufnell Park’s Inside Store London) is a great example of this. It is somewhere to place a cup of tea or coffee but easy to move around if you find yourself sitting in different places at different times of the day. This table even has a handle on top to allow you to carry it around. In fact, that’s where the name comes from – DLM stands for Don’t Leave Me!
